Water has always been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists. Its transparency and movement, the play of glints and reflections are mesmerizing. The splash of waves and the play of shades will give you peace of mind. In this course we will learn how to depict the transparency of water and discover the principles and techniques for creating realistic watercolors.

We'll do some preparatory exercises in which I will explain the main points and patterns of depicting transparency and stones under water. You will learn to spot these principles, choose good references, and remember the basic knowledge of depicting three-dimensional objects.

We will paint a shallow forest river. We'll focus on the image of stones under water, reflections and transparency.

We'll paint a plot with a sandy shore, in which we will learn to depict the depth of water without waves, while showing its transparency and expressive reflections.

We'll paint a landscape with a mountain lake on a clear day. We will put to practice the gained knowledge, depict the transparency of water at different depths as well as dry and wet stones.

As a final plot, we'll paint a plot with shallow water where we'll learn to convey the materiality of stones and water. We'll practice depicting small waves and sun glints.

Above, I have indicated the materials that I recommend and use constantly myself. But your materials may differ and that’s okay!
You can use your usual brushes and paints. If you do not have some pigments, many of them can be replaced with similar ones or can be mixed. I use masking fluid in two out of four works and it really comes in handy.
