Water has always been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for artists.
Water has many images: it can be calm, fast, raging. The movement of water has always been an image of life itself, of purification and renewal in many cultures. In this course we will learn to depict water in dynamics, study principles and techniques for creating realistic watercolors with water in mountain rivers and waterfalls, we will be charged with its energy and will definitely direct it in a creative direction!

Theoretical block

The theoretical block consists of 5 preparatory exercises, among which we will draw together a diagram I have called “Anatomy of a Waterfall”, in which I will visually explain the main points and patterns of depicting water in motion. You will learn how to notice these principles, choose successful references, learn to convey the volume and texture of rocks, and create lively and realistic splashes of water.

We will depict a small waterfall, talk about composition and tone, pay attention to creating lighting effects, splashing water, creating textures and conveying water transparency.

We will paint a story with a stone and a forest river with rapids, where we will practice the techniques of transferring the materiality of water, the texture of moss and lace lighting.

Moving water

Let's paint a landscape with textured stones and transparent water in the foreground, which was very popular in my social networks. We'll go through each stage in detail, I'll tell you about pitfalls that you should pay attention to in such stories.

Silver flow

As a bonus work, we will write a story from my watercolor club in which we will learn how to create a silvery shimmering effect, consolidate all the techniques we have learned and enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the mountains.

You can use your usual brushes and paints. If you do not have some pigments, many of them can be replaced with similar ones or can be mixed. I use masking fluid in two out of four works and it really comes in handy.
