«Snow is a wonderful subject of study for the painter. Its whiteness conceals many shades, it is the best teacher of color science, for those who can observe."

This course was conceived as a series of lessons on winter landscape, but in the process of its creation I realized that it turned out to be wider than one season and the patterns described in the course are applicable to other seasons and even to other genres of painting.

Course content
LESSON №1

Winter fairy tale

Available ✔️
Duration:  1 hour 5 minutes
English voice-over, subtitles

We will make a landscape in a delicate color scheme, learn to combine different references to depict our own idea. We will also talk about the features of snow-covered trees and lighting in the morning/evening.

Exercise

Study

Available ✔️
Duration: 39 minutes
English voice-over, subtitles

Before depicting the second work, we will conduct a mini-research to find out what influences the color of shadows and whether it is true that warm light produces cold shadows. And even turn to the help of modern technology to study the distribution of light shadows on the surface of objects and confirm our hypotheses in practice.

LESSON №2

Clear winter day

Available ✔️
Duration: 1 hour 33 minutes
English voice-over, subtitles

We will apply our knowledge and depict a bright clear day, trace how the color of snow changes in the light and in the shadows and what affects it. We will learn to depict the complex configuration of spruce branches, paying attention to details, but not forgetting about large volumes.

LESSON №3

Winter mystery

Available  ✔️
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
English voice-over, subtitles

Now we are ready to move on to a large A2 sheet. We will learn the sequence of working on a large format, depict contrasting saturated lighting, and practice techniques for depicting trees, snow and ice.

I’m very attracted to water scenes, but I love winter just as much,
because snow is the same as water, but frozen. In my practice, I pay a lot of attention to physics
and optical phenomena, so in this course we’ll not only write three vivid stories together, but we’ll also find out,
what logic I use to depict them.

My job is to help artists learn to analyze,
without copy, to depict the world, to understand its structure and to constantly broaden their horizons. By doing so
we increase our skill and accuracy in conveying the artistic image.

Above, I have indicated the materials that I recommend and use constantly myself. But your materials may differ and that’s okay!
You can use your usual brushes and paints. If you do not have some pigments, many of them can be replaced with similar ones or can be mixed. I use masking fluid in two out of four works and it really comes in handy.
